True stereo, true active design, true legato, true [insert feature] – it’s in a good 10% of the music and audio industry product announcements and descriptions in the past decade and a half!
But what does it mean and how did our industry start using it?
Okay, true legato means that the legato transitions between two notes in a sample library were recorded rather than being simulated with synthesis parameters. But other than that, we’re quite serious!

“True stereo” means the signal is not summed to mono before processing. For a reverb, that’s the difference between hearing L/R separation in a stereo send or not.
Got that – discrete stereo – but I’m raising the larger question. “True” is a marketing word whose meaning usually escapes me.
What’s…I dunno, a true cardioid pattern? True implies false, in other words.
Inquiring minds want to know.
